Food And Drink Archaeology of Scotland, Presentation Three, Logo based on the Towie Stone Ball
Introduction
Image of the carved stone from Invergowrie, Angus

In this section we will examine the production of food and related resources, examining the use of wild resources and farming. It is sometimes too easy to think of food simply in terms of sustaining the body, and basic needs. But eating and drinking are also sensual and enjoyable activities, and meals must have been central to social life. Prehistoric ritual sites are often associated with evidence for feasting, and alcoholic drinks are known from early prehistory. Some of these aspects of past lives are captured in this wonderful carved stone from Invergowrie, Angus. Here a horse moves wearily uphill, whilst the rider busies himself with his drinking horn; it is a timeless and evocative image.
