How do I connect if I'm not on the Edinburgh University Network?

Our course teaching materials are designed to work on the Edinburgh Network but not normally outside the University. If you are not logged onto the Edinburgh network you must use an internet (web) proxy server to access the pages.

Settings on this page are for Internet Explorer - other browsers are set up in a similar manner, sometimes in the Preferences option.

If you use RESNET or other broadband connection such as Cable, then go to Internet Explorer - TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - CONNECTIONS - LAN SETTINGS. If there are any existing setting write them down and then ensure that the Proxy server box is ticked and type wwwcache.ed.ac.uk into the address box below and 3128 into the port box. Your settings should look like this.

Lan settings for Internet Explorer

If you use a dial-up connection such as BT ADSL or BT, Tiscali or Freeserve dialup you will have to alter your proxy settings as follows

  1. Open the Web Browser.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  3. Click on the Connections tab.
  4. In the window called Dial-up Settings select the icon that you use to connect to the internet, e.g., Connect To BT (or whatever ISP you use).
  5. Click on the button called Settings.
  6. In the box Use a proxy server set the following.
  7. Type in wwwcache.ed.ac.uk for the proxy server and in the box called Port type in 3128
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click OK again
  10. Click OK once more.

To use the internet normally you will have to undo these settings by clicking the tick box Use a Proxy. If you do not disable the proxy for normal use all your internet traffic will go through the proxy and may slow down you connection a little.

You will be asked for a login and password. Use the login associated with public labs ( e.g s0999999) or your UUN ( e.g jdandy) and the password you use for email ( if it is not the same as the public labs login one)

If you cannot get a proxy to work then please ensure that you have tried the University's instructions how to set up a web proxy before trying one of the alternative methods listed below.

You can use this form link, if all the above fails, to request a temporary login and password or alternatively Email the Computing Officer in Archaeology Ian.Morrison@ed.ac.uk for help and/or advice.
