Dr. Midgley studied archaeology at the University of Edinburgh (MA Hons. 1978, Ph.D. 1985) and has been teaching at Edinburgh since 1989.  Her teaching and research interests are centred on continental Europe, and include transition from hunter-gathering to farming, early farming communities of Central and North-West Europe, emergence of monumentality in funerary and ceremonial contexts.  She is also interested in archaeological theory and the history of archaeology as a discipline.
